Formal Decision on Copyright Term Extension on Monday

Filed under: Copyright Term Extension,English, informationspolitik — Christian Engström @ 13:13

The Council will take the formal decision to extend the copyright term for music recordings on Monday

Yesterday there was a meeting of the Coreper, which is Brussels jargon for the Committee of the Permanent Representatives to the EU. Its job is to prepare the agenda for the ministerial Council meetings.

At the Coreper meeting, it was decided that the EU Council of Ministers will take the formal decision to extend the protection term for music recordings from 50 to 70 years on Monday. It will be an ”A item” on the agenda, which means that the ministers will just rubber stamp the decision without any discussion.

Unless a miracle happens, and one or more governments change their mind over the weekend, the term extension will then be a fact.

  1. Which shows the European Parliament is just an expensive accessory designed to give EU a democratic look. But the decisions are made somewhere else and the parliament has nothing to say because nobody asks.

  2. How do we get in touch with the Danish Government contacts urgently in this matter? They have a job to do, to serve the public, to make tough decisions and to have an impact on social development. No competent politician can fail to understand that an extension to 200 years would not generate wider or deeper access to culture for society, the aim of copyright, and neither would an extension to 70 years.

  5. @2: Do you have any competent politicians in Denmark? Wow! Could you share some photos so I can see what such a thing looks like? I only know about politicians prostituting themselves to whatever interest pays best, which is typically not the public interest. A typical politician will support copyright or whatever extension to 10000 years if the corporations tell him so.

  6. Very good. This should in the end open a new way of understanding copyright.

It’s like the decision by the Churh and Galileo Galilei, for 400 years ago.
